Kybera has reached an important milestone in the development of its autonomous technology, launching its autonomous terminal tractor Demo Project at Belfast Container Terminal (BCT).
In September, teams at Kybera and BCT marked the launch of the project and the completion of a major first step: retrofitting our Terberg YT-193 terminal tractor with the hardware required to support Kybera’s autonomous driving technology.
With the vehicle now equipped, our team is ready to begin the next stage: developing, testing, and validating the system within a live container terminal environment.
Belfast is an important part of Kybera’s development journey. This project gives our engineers regular access to a real operational port, allowing us to progressively test the vehicle across increasingly complex scenarios and develop the integrations, operational processes and safety evidence required for autonomous operations.
As part of the project, Kybera is also working towards independent certification of our autonomous terminal tractor solution with TÜV SÜD. This will provide independent assessment of the safety of the solution and is an important step towards deploying our technology in commercial terminal operations.
The project will also help us tackle one of the biggest challenges facing industrial autonomy: making new technology work safely and reliably within existing operations.
For Kybera, autonomous terminal tractors are an important starting point. Our broader ambition is to build the technology and integration layer that enables different autonomous systems, existing terminal infrastructure and operational software to work together effectively.
The Belfast project gives us the environment to develop that capability from the ground up, beginning with one vehicle and learning from real operations.
Reaching this point has required significant work from the teams at Kybera, Belfast Container Terminal and Scruttons. We thank everyone involved for their support and collaboration.
There is plenty of work ahead, but with the truck retrofitted and testing ready to begin, this is an exciting step forward.
